Prince Harry security row erupts on GMB as Susanna Reid defends royal

This Morning: Rylan shares his opinion on Prince Harry security

Good Morning Britain presenter Susanna Reid furiously defended Prince Harry who challenged the Home Office over his security protection when visiting the UK in a heated debate.

Susanna began: “Harry is at the High Court at the moment, with his lawyers saying he was treated unfairly when his automatic police protection was withdrawn and officials failed to consider the ongoing security threat to the Duke of Sussex and the possible impact on the nation if he became a victim to a successful attack.

“I have to say I’m quite shocked they withdrew his security – he’s still Prince Harry! He’s still a risk. This is only when he comes back here.”

As her guest squabbled over Susanna’s statement, she continued to defend the father-of-two.

Susanna, 52, told viewers: “He’s still part of the Royal Family!”

However, one guest who disagreed with the ITV host said: “If Harry has withdrawn and wants to go down a different road, that is his prerogative.”

Susanna chimed in: “That doesn’t stop which family he was born into and therefore, that he is at risk.”

The guest was having none of it and replied: “Why does The Met have to be like a circus here and have to be at every beck and call of every dignitary who wants to come back, be it Prince Harry or not?”

Susanna replied: “It is one dignitary coming back – and because he is the son of the King.”

Another guest called Kevin Maguire, explained to ITV viewers Prince Harry gets protection if he returns to the UK for a Coronation.

Kevin remarked: “But every time he comes back and he wants to go to a nightclub or something or see his mates, why should we be paying the bill?”

Susanna reminded the guests how few times Prince Harry has returned to the UK since starting a new life in the US with his wife Meghan Markle.

Fellow host Ed Balls reminded Susanna that the Duke had “chosen to become a celebrity” in recent years and stressed how other stars pay for their own security and do not rely on the British taxpayer.

Still defending Prince Harry, Susanna shut Ed down by telling him: “Yes, but celebrities are not born into royal families. His status hasn’t changed.”

The Home Office has stated the Prince’s security is decided on a case-by-case basis.

Home Office lawyers told the court on Tuesday there will still be publicly funded police security for Prince Harry, but these will be “bespoke arrangements, specifically tailored to him”.

Good Morning Britain airs on weekdays between 6am and 9am on ITV.
